{"id":112309,"date":"2022-08-27T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-27T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com\/?p=112309"},"modified":"2022-08-26T23:02:26","modified_gmt":"2022-08-27T03:02:26","slug":"highway-department-completes-sidewalk-project-near-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com\/2022\/08\/112309\/highway-department-completes-sidewalk-project-near-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Highway department completes sidewalk project near school"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Riverhead Highway Department completed a new sidewalk with striping and pavement on Cranberry Street in Riverhead \u2014 just in time for school to open.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow kids can be on this road safely,\u201d said Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Zaleski said the road has been on his priority list for several years.\u00a0He recalled seeing kids walking on the narrow road, where school bus\u00a0tires \u201cwere just a couple inches from them.\u201d There was previously no sidewalk on the south part of the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cranberry Street is the road that connects Roanoke Avenue with North Griffing Avenue, and it\u2019s used by both kids going to and come from school, and drivers looking for shortcuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s finished as of today,\u201d\u00a0Mr. Zaleski said Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the project cost about $230,000, and that\u00a0Dawn Thomas, the town\u2019s community development director, will look for a grant to offset the cost of the project.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Zaleski, who took office in January, said Ms. Thomas, deputy town engineer Ken Testa and Councilman Ken Rothwell were all supportive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything we did worked,\u201d Mr. Zaleski said. \u201cEven after the heavy rain a few days ago, this road was bone dry.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Riverhead Highway Department completed a new sidewalk with striping and pavement on Cranberry Street in Riverhead \u2014 just in time for school to open.\u00a0 \u201cNow kids can be on this road safely,\u201d said Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski.&nbsp;
