{"id":114235,"date":"2023-01-06T09:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com\/?p=114235"},"modified":"2023-01-08T23:44:45","modified_gmt":"2023-01-09T04:44:45","slug":"2022-public-servants-of-the-year-steve-shauger-kristy-verity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com\/2023\/01\/114235\/2022-public-servants-of-the-year-steve-shauger-kristy-verity\/","title":{"rendered":"2022 Public Servants of the Year: Steve Shauger &#038; Kristy Verity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The News-Review\u2019s Public Servants of the Year are Steve Shauger and Kristy Verity of the Riverhead Business Improvement District Management Association, who have spearheaded several popular events the BID sponsors, sometimes in conjunction with other organizations like Chamber of Commerce, bringing thousands of people to downtown Riverhead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Shauger, general manager of the Hyatt Place East End, is president of the BIDMA, a position he\u2019s held since July 2016, after serving on the board since 2013.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Verity is BIDMA\u2019s executive director, a position she\u2019s held since July 2019. Her background is in marketing, public relations and event planning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExcellent choices,\u201d said Councilman Tim Hubbard, who is the Town Board liaison to the BIDMA. \u201cThose two single handedly put together the Alive on 25 concerts,\u201d adding \u201cIt\u2019s a massive undertaking every year and they are always hands on with everything they do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Hubbard said the events bring visitors to downtown Riverhead who might then come back to explore the town further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe businesses all feel that anything that can generate people in the downtown area is a great thing,\u201d said Connie Lassandro, president of the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce. \u201cAll the events they\u2019ve had bring a lot of camaraderie and community spirit to the area. It\u2019s something that\u2019s welcomed by the businesses and by the community at large.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chamber has actually taken over running the Cardboard Boat Race, although Mr. Shauger and Ms. Verity still help out, Ms. Lassandro said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are very compassionate about the town,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Business Improvement District is a taxing entity that represents businesses in downtown Riverhead, and consists essentially the Riverhead Town Board members.
