{"id":116362,"date":"2023-05-30T10:42:40","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T14:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com\/?p=116362"},"modified":"2023-06-01T22:43:16","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T02:43:16","slug":"main-street-chalk-art-festival-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com\/2023\/05\/116362\/main-street-chalk-art-festival-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Picture perfect weather greets Main Street chalk art festival"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the weeks leading up to the annual Mosaic Street Painting Festival on Main Street, East End Arts creative director <a href=\"https:\/\/riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com\/2022\/07\/111726\/east-end-arts-looks-to-the-future-by-honoring-its-history\/\">Wendy Weiss<\/a> hoped for precisely the kind of day Sunday turned out to be \u2014 bright sunshine with a nice breeze and temperatures in the 60s and low 70s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t hope for better than this,\u201d she said Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Weiss said that weather is \u201c50% of the stress\u201d leading up to the annual chalk art festival held each <a href=\"https:\/\/riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com\/2023\/05\/116391\/riverhead-memorial-day-2023\/\">Memorial Day weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival was inspired by artists in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy, where an annual street painting competition draws chalk artists from all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Weiss said that nearly three decades ago, her predecessors at East End Arts thought, \u201cwhy not bring that to Riverhead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd after 27 years \u2014 as you can see \u2014 it\u2019s just getting bigger and bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Weiss was thrilled with Sunday\u2019s turnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing. There\u2019s just so many people of all different ages having fun, some serious artists who are doing amazing things you could never imagine could happen in chalk, lots of smiles [and] lots of vendors. Just a really fun, fun day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the festival is a favorite for residents and visitors alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople keep coming down and telling me they love Riverhead like this and they wish this happened more than once a year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div whom return year after year: Ryan, Melissa, Zooey, Chrissy, Summer Paul, Jack, C.C. and Greta among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Weiss said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival was held virtually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was really important to the team here to keep the spirit of that alive,\u201d she said. \u201cChalk was sent out to people who participated, and they did [mosaics] in their driveways or on their sidewalks or on the streets in front of their houses. There was still a festival, it\u2019s just that everybody stayed home and submitted [mosaics] through videos and photos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, the beauty is fleeting: the colorful chalk art mosaics are no match for traffic and weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey go pretty fast,\u201d Ms. Weiss said. \u201cWhen the street reopens and the cars come back you can actually see clouds of chalk in the beginning, which is kind of fun.
