More than a quarter-century of distinguished service to the Town of Riverhead<\/a> came to a close last month at a spirited, jam-packed retirement party for Diane Wilhelm, Riverhead\u2019s beloved longtime town clerk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDiane has been a treasure,\u201d Supervisor Yvette Aguiar said in an interview, describing Ms. Wilhelm as one of the warmest and most talented professionals with whom she has ever worked. \u201cThe entire community loves her.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Wilhelm was appointed town clerk in November 2008 then elected to the office a year later. Prior to that she served as the town\u2019s records management officer, registrar of vital statistics and marriage officiant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s like the most amazing person ever,\u201d said colleague Carol Del Vecchio, a senior account clerk in the town clerk\u2019s office. \u201cShe\u2019s very dedicated to the town, to the employees and to the people of the town. She\u2019s very caring and understanding. She\u2019s always trying to help everyone. She goes the extra mile above and beyond everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy town clerk Juliann O\u2019Neill said that when Ms. Wilhelm is not working, she\u2019s an active longtime volunteer in Riverhead, including with Riverhead Townscape, the nonprofit organizers of the Riverhead Country Fair, and at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhenever there\u2019s a need for any kind of volunteer work,\u201d Ms. O\u2019Neill said, \u201cshe will be one of the first to put her hand up and help.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her tenure, Ms. Wilhelm has digitized much of the town\u2019s records, including minutes of Town Board meetings that stretch back to 1792 and are now available on the town\u2019s website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s as far as you possibly can go, because the town was founded in 1792,\u201d Ms. Wilhelm told Riverhead News-Review last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The huge project was realized with a $60,000 grant she sought and received from the New York State Archives, which funded a complete review, purge, index and cataloging of archived records. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The clerk\u2019s office also began accepting credit cards under Ms. Wilhelm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Wilhelm was an active member of the Nassau\/Suffolk Town Clerks Association and the New York State Town Clerks Association, where she served as district director from 2013 to 2016. Through the state clerks association, Ms. Wilhelm earned certification as a registered municipal clerk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy town supervisor Devon Higgins said that Ms. Wilhelm is both a friend and a role model. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe is an absolute gem. I\u2019ve been working with her only for four years, which \u2014 certainly relative to other folks here at Town Hall \u2014 is not as long. But I can tell you, she was my first friend at Town Hall. She has a heart the size of Texas. And when I tell you she is probably one of the most helpful people in Town Hall, I mean that \u2014 whether you\u2019re a constituent, whether you\u2019re a fellow employee, whether you\u2019re Joe Blow off the street, it doesn\u2019t matter. She just is absolutely always willing to help and be of service. And I think that\u2019s one of the reasons why she has been such an effective town clerk, because she truly, truly cares.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Higgins added that Ms. Wilhelm is also a trusted counselor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe had two giant chairs in her office, in the old [Town Hall on Howell Avenue] \u2026 I used to joke with her that was my therapy chair. And I would sometimes go in and say, \u2018Okay, I\u2019m here for therapy.\u2019 We joke and she\u2019d say, \u2018Okay, what\u2019s going on?\u2019 We would joke, but she sort of is the matriarch in some ways, sort of the wise, kind of calming presence that everybody looks to now and again.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Receiver of Taxes Laurie Zaneski has risen through the ranks with her friend, Ms. Wilhelm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe both started as deputies to our elected officials. So I was the tax receiver\u2019s office\u2019s deputy. She was in the clerk\u2019s [office] \u2026 then Diane and I ran [for office] together, and we\u2019ve been running together ever since. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur first year we were both opposed. And then after that the Democrats and the Republicans were like, \u2018Diane, so well-known and loved. Laurie\u2019s so well-known. We\u2019re not going to run anyone against them because it\u2019s a waste of the committee\u2019s money.\u2019 So Diane and I have been like, running buddies ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others said Ms. Wilhelm\u2019s passion for helping people springs from her humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe is one of the most humble people I know,\u201d deputy receiver of taxes Lisa Richards said in an interview at Ms. Wilhelm\u2019s retirement party. \u201cShe wasn\u2019t going to come here tonight, because this was going to be about her and she didn\u2019t want the attention. She\u2019s just a really great person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For her decades of sterling service to Riverhead, her sincere joy in helping others and her reliably great sense of humor, Diane Wilhelm is the Riverhead News-Review\u2019s 2023 Public Servant of the Year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
