Star Confectionery owner and local legend Anthony Meras has been chosen to be the Grand Marshal of this spring\u2019s annual Jamesport St. Patrick\u2019s Day parade<\/a>, and he couldn\u2019t be more thrilled.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKevin [Carrick] and John [Cuddy] from the Emerald Society came into the restaurant and told me, and I was shocked,\u201d he said in an interview this week. \u201cI was shocked and overwhelmed. It\u2019s such a complete honor to be chosen for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, the garrulous cook wondered with a laugh if the East End Emerald Society made the right choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFirst of all, they’re going to give me a microphone the night of the [parade] fundraiser. I said, \u2018That’s a mistake.\u2019 I wanted to be Johnny Carson growing up. Everybody wants to be a baseball player but I thought Johnny Carson was the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also light-heartedly warned his friend [and Riverhead Town Councilwoman] Joann Waski about the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI said to Joann, \u2018Listen, this could be the longest parade ever, because I’m going to be hugging and kissing and shaking everybody’s hands and yapping and talking.\u2019 She said, \u2018no, no \u2014 that\u2019s exactly why we asked you to be the Grand Marshal. I\u2019m going to pull you along!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honorary appointment was a nice touch following a bit of a tough year for Mr. Meras and his family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last fall, Star Confectionary \u2014 which Mr. Meras\u2019 family has operated for more than 140 years \u2014 was robbed for the first time in its storied history and $10,000 was stolen from a safe inside the restaurant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was [$3,000 in] sales tax money that you pay each quarter,\u201d he said from behind the counter at Star\u2019s the morning after the robbery. \u201cAnd then there was [$7,000] that was going to the bank for deposit for the week to pay the bills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Meras also lost a prized stack of $2 bills, which he collects \u2014 a habit the diner owner picked up from his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even the robbery had a silver lining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When word got out about the break-in, Michelle Papa, a veteran waitress at the Main St. diner, launched a GoFundMe page for the Meras family, and the following morning \u2014 after more than 130 individual donations, the restaurant proprietor had to call her to stop seeking contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the girls that works for us, she\u2019s been here since she was 14. She\u2019s 40 now. And she set up the GoFundMe, and within 12 hours, it reached the goal of the money that was stolen from the safe,\u201d Mr. Meras said. By the time they turned off the fundraising, $10,850<\/a> had been raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that one customer\u2019s $5 donation brought him to tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a blessing and a curse: a curse that we had it stolen, but a blessing \u2014 that outpouring of love from the whole community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For someone who doesn\u2019t even live in Jamesport and isn’t of Irish heritage (he\u2019s Greek), Mr. Meras feels blessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
