The airborne racket, should it come to a stop in Southold or Riverhead waters, is prohibited by both towns\u2019 codes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Southold Town code,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ecode360.com\/5163231?highlight=seaplane&amp;highlight=seaplanes&amp;searchId=7308144628181037#5163231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chapter 280-111<\/a>, Section K, seaplanes are prohibited from landing, taking off from,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/suffolktimes.timesreview.com\/2022\/09\/town-hall-notes-public-hearing-set-on-seaplane-regulations-for-oct-4\/#:~:text=4,-By%20Brianne%20Ledda&amp;text=The%20Southold%20Town%20Board%20has,town%20docks%20and\/or%20floats.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deplaning or emplaning<\/a>&nbsp;at Southold Town beaches, waterways, docks or floats. Riverhead Town code&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ecode360.com\/27164253?highlight=seaplane&amp;highlight=seaplanes&amp;searchId=7308642941265920#27164234\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chapter 301-233<\/a>, Section C, prohibits seaplanes from taking off or landing on Riverhead waterways. Emergency, medical and military landings are exempt from both town codes.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ecode360.com\/7729100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shelter Island<\/a>&nbsp;has no seaplane regulations on the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite local laws,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flytropic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tropic Ocean Airways<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 a private charter company based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. \u2014 has advertised North Fork seaplane excursions on its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flytropic.com\/north-fork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>&nbsp;from Sept. 6 through Oct. 31. The excursions promise wine hops, sea-to-table experiences and an oyster farm tour. Greenport, Shelter Island, Cutchogue, Southold and Mattituck are \u201cpopular places to visit\u201d listed on the company\u2019s website promoting the flights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company takes off in Cessna Grand Caravans from Midtown Manhattan, Westchester, Greenwich, Hudson Valley, Sands Point Seaplane Base in Nassau County and other private areas throughout the region. For a roundtrip excursion from New York City, pricing starts at $5,000, Tropic Ocean Airways sales director Patricia Summerfield told The Suffolk Times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About two weeks ago, residents in New Suffolk reported a Tropic Ocean Airways seaplane landing at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsuffolkwaterfront.org\/submarine-beach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Submarine Beach<\/a>. Following the reports, town attorney Paul DeChance forwarded a copy of both the town\u2019s law prohibiting seaplanes and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ecode360.com\/41552138?highlight=taxi&amp;highlight=water&amp;searchId=7317746385838648#40873923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suffolk County law<\/a>&nbsp;requiring licenses for water taxis and water limos transporting passengers in county to Tropic Ocean Airways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Summerfield acknowledged Tropic Ocean Airways\u2019 receipt of the correspondence from the town attorney and added that the company does \u201cnot plan\u201d to operate in Southold Town waters. She added that Tropic Ocean Airway seaplanes would land in Shelter Island Sound. The planes would either&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flytropic.com\/partners\/the-pridwin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beach<\/a>&nbsp;near&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caperesorts.com\/pridwin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Pridwin Hotel and Cottages<\/a>&nbsp;or coordinate a boat transfer to get to shore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southold\u2019s law prohibiting sea planes is paramount for public safety, Town Supervisor Al Krupski told The Suffolk Times. The heavily trafficked Peconic Bay could be a potentially \u201cdisastrous\u201d place for seaplanes to land.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s also a] quality of life [issue] when you have aircraft flying very low over people\u2019s [homes],\u201d Mr. Krupski said. \u201cThey\u2019re advertising they\u2019re going to fly low enough to sight see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If community members spot a seaplane land in Southold waters, Mr. Krupski said they should call 911 to alert local police.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you live close to the North Shore, you\u2019re probably familiar with the loud hum of a seaplane or helicopter as passing overhead during the warmer months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you live close to the North Shore, you\u2019re probably familiar with the loud hum of a seaplane or helicopter as passing overhead during the warmer months.
